South Yarra Residence
South Yarra Residence redefines a roughcast, Arts and Craft home as a series of interior atmospheres that enhance liveability and encourage the family to gather. Sculpted forms, bold hues and carefully curated furniture and décor capture the homeowners’ daring and eclectic spirit, mirroring their energetic art collection without overshadowing it.
The brief called for a family home that would celebrate the homeowners’ vast Australian art collection and integrate new artisan objects by local Melbourne makers. Seeking to add personality and vibrancy to the minimalist home, the design team developed a narrative around the artwork’s warmth, richness, and playfulness, driving the curation of multiple interior atmospheres within a single residence.
A vibrant lounge space designed for the family’s younger members pays homage to the owners’ love of Memphis Milano design, while a moody private den is shrouded in dark, textured grasscloth wallpaper, drawing focus to a striking Rosso marble-clad fireplace. Beyond, a sunlit living, dining and kitchen space is enlivened with stained timber veneer panelling, teal cabinetry, and a striking pebble-shaped island bench in white marble, crafting a vibrant family hub and natural gathering place for guests.
Throughout, a series of bespoke joinery pieces elevate the impression of each space. A custom DJ unit and concealed, marble-topped bar elevate the family’s experience of entertaining, while geometric shelving to the Memphis lounge references the energy of Sottsass’ iconic Carlton Room Divider, designed in 1981. Below, a basement storage area is transformed into a 2000+ wine cellar, housing the client’s extensive wine collection.
