Harrison Interiors

Newport Residence

The brief provided by the owners perfectly reflected their own personalities – homely and warm with a chilled-out charm. It also called for an artisanal edge and a celebration of timber, so elements with a slight eclectic feel contribute to a humbly rich and graceful palette.

The house is home to a young family with two little girls, so consideration was given to their needs (and Wants) in the here and now, but also into the future. The intent was to create an interior that would age well, both practically and aesthetically.

Storage was key (already thinking about a shared bathroom in the teen years!), so plentiful custom timber joinery was installed. materials that get better with age were chosen throughout: recycled Tasmanian oak floorboards for warmth, brass handles and tapware for the beautiful patina, Carrara marble for its lustrous tactility.

Adding to this earnest base palette, a textural tiling selection imparts movement and individuality to spaces: square mosaics for the kitchen splashback, pale grey terrazzo and long subway wall tiles in the kids bathroom, and darker grey terrazzo and penny rounds to the master ensuite. The parent’s bathroom was made possible by installing a European laundry elsewhere, and the mature, contemporary mood of this wet area is heightened by a deeper grey scheme with marble vanity, benchtops and capping to the half-height wall tiles.

The living spaces carry a sense of luxury that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The warm timber that the clients so love lends a super-laidback calm when supporting a neutral, light and open space with white and black accents. The kitchen was re-oriented to create a direct connect to the dining area and flow through to the rear terrace. A freestanding fireplace and grey and denim togo sofa round out the inviting, serenely cozy feel.
